Study Material: Romans 9:13-15
13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
Today’s Teaching:
Unrighteous acts by God? Never. God cannot be and will never be unrighteous (v14). God said Jacob He loved, but Esau He hated. Was God being unjust in His statement? Did He not have a reason to say so? The Bible records: Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright (Heb 12:16). God had positioned Esau as the firstborn of his father, but Esau decided to sell that which God had given him for food that comes out of man as waste. Esau was ungrateful.
God says that He has mercy and compassion on whom He chooses (v15). Is that unrighteous? Certainly not. In fact, He has mercy and compassion on whom He chooses because He is righteous. God may choose to deny a widow of 10 children a new job with better pay because maybe it will cause her to travel too much and expose her children to sexual violence from a stranger who visits when she is away. He may choose for that single woman with no children to get that job because when she goes, since she has no children or husband at home, she will take some personal time to mingle and encounter God through an Evangelist.
Is there unrighteousness with God? No! Only God knows the end of a matter. Only He knows what lies ahead. God not giving you what you want? Have you considered that is because He loves you? It is not because God is unfair. It is because He is righteous and just that He sometimes withholds some things from you. Why did He allow Jacob to be blessed with Esau’s blessings? Esau abused God’s grace upon His life. He rejected it. God is a jealous God. Esau exchanged his God given headship and authority for meat.
Take Home Question In what way do you take God’s blessings upon your life for granted? If you take your own feet and walk out of your blessing, do you blame God?
Homework: Repent and ask God for mercy. Pray and ask God to give you the grace to never use your own feet to walk out of your blessings. Thank God for His righteousness.
