Study Material: Luke 2:3-5
3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
When we do not know where we belong, we seem to journey aimlessly. When one has no sense of belonging, there is no commitment or attachment. In today’s study material, there was a taxation exercise going on, and everyone had to go to his or her own city in order to be taxed (v3). Mary was at the later stages of her pregnancy at this time (v5b). She had to go to Bethlehem with her husband (v4). Joseph belonged in Bethlehem and Mary belonged with her husband.
Everyone belongs somewhere. Although it might not always feel that way, none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's (Romans 14:7-8). Although Jesus Christ is the Son of God, but when He came to earth, He had to be born of an earthly family. When we are born again and give our lives to Christ, we belong to Him. Because we belong to Him, we belong to His mission. He left us to continue finding the lost (Mtt 28:19-20); and may all of them be found in Jesus’ name.
Nomads go from place to place in search of a new destination and stopping place. But for us, Jesus Christ was born to give us access and belonging to that one Body – the Body of Christ. That one Body has a mission to save souls. It takes no less than 30 minutes to go out, find a gift, buy it and wrap it. It takes only 3-5 minutes minimum to tell someone about salvation through Jesus Christ. Mary and Joseph had to go to Bethlehem where Joseph belonged. Where do you belong? Joseph went to be counted amongst the lineage of David (v4b)? Can you be counted amongst the lineage of Christ? Are you carrying out His mission?
Take Home Lesson: Christmas is not about gift buying and food shopping. If you belong to the Body of Christ, you belong to its mission of saving souls.
Homework: Win a soul. Go and tell someone about Christ – the greatest gift of all.
