Study Material: Matthew 16:26-27
26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
Today’s Teaching:
When looking for a job, one looks at the salary and of course considers the fringe benefits such as medical insurance, vacation time, tuition support and others. The best employers add other perks such as living expenses, official credit cards or expense accounts etc. In 2013, CNN rated Google as the best employer to work for. Their stocks had crossed $1000; and in addition, Google donates $50 for every 5 hours that an employee volunteers. With that, its employees participate in philanthropic work such visits to Accra, Ghana or New Delhi, India to work on community development projects.
No matter the benefits offered by earthly employers; there is no boss who outperforms, outranks, outgives or outspends Jehovah El Shaddai. He is all-sufficient. He does not depend on the situation of the stock market in order for Him to reward. Service to God pays you for a lifetime and the benefits are immeasurable. You can work for the Googles of the world or any other excellent employers and you might gain all manner of earthly benefits, but what will you gain if you have focused on those earthly riches and then lost your soul (v26)? The rewards that people are looking for on earth are temporary rewards, but those who render service to the Kingdom are rewarded by God (v27).
He is compassionate and His works are of compassion. In that regard, whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving (Col 3:23-24). Then people will say, “Surely the righteous still are rewarded; surely there is a God who judges the earth (Ps 58:11). What is that reward? The crown of righteousness – eternal life (II Tim 4:8).
Take Home Lesson: God is the best employer with the best benefits package. Working for Him has eternal benefits.
Homework: Thank God for being the best employer in the heavens and the earth. Ask Him to never fire or retire you. If you do not already work for Him, ask Him for that chance to serve. Ask Him to direct you as to where to serve Him.
