Study Material: Romans 12:1
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Today’s Teaching:
As a child, one is taught about the basic food groups. One must eat a balanced diet in order to ensure proper growth and development. One must ensure the right about of exercise for maintenance of the body, as well as the proper amount of rest and relaxation to enable the body rejuvenate itself. One must take daily baths and wash the hair, clean the ears and carry out other detailed works of cleansing. There are times when one must even take laxatives to ensure proper cleansing of the intestinal track. These are some of the physical steps one must take for proper temple care.
For those who might have joined this teaching at the end, temple care is a teaching on the care of our bodies, which are the temples of God. If God must dwell in us, then we must make our bodies habitable for Him. Care of our bodies is an act of service to God (v1). Our spiritual care is as important as the physical. We need to receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and come under the power of His cleansing blood. We need to conduct detailed cleansing in area of our lives where we need deliverance. We need to immerse ourselves in the Word of God, our spiritual food. And we need to only listen, watch and be a part of things that will edify our temples.
We are to present our bodies holy unto God (v1). Taking alcohol and even going to the extent of lewdness and drunkenness is not a form of worship to God. Watching pornography or listening to vulgar music does not reverence God. Eating junk food and taking in excess fat and things that cause heart disease or other illnesses are not acceptable forms of worship. As we close out this week’s teaching on temple care, ask yourself how you can improve your temple care to make your body an acceptable form of worship and sacrifice to God. If your body will have to survive for the next 10 – 70 years (depending on your age), what kind of tune up does it require for proper maintenance, and how frequently? How can you change the presentation of your temple?
Homework: Declare a new day in your life for particular areas where you have been struggling. Is it reading the Bible, praying, going to church or giving more service to God? As the year is running out, reflect on the areas that need attention and begin to ask God to help you. If you having been maintaining well, ask God to never allow you to slip back.
