Study Material: Matthew 6:9-10 NIV
9 This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Today’s Teaching:
Today is the first day of the second half of the year. Glory be to God. This is the 7th month of the year, and 7 means
perfection. May God perfect everything that He is working in your life. In this second half of the year, may He grant us the desires of our hearts according to His perfect will for our lives. But before going forward today, let us ask ourselves a question. What do our hearts desire?
To know what our hearts desire, we need to know the nature of our hearts. For example, to know what God desires of us, we need to know Him. In knowing Him, we know that God is love (I Jn 4:8b). Likewise, we need to know the heart.
Jeremiah 17:9 NIV says that the heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? Wow! That means, no matter the other attributes and features of the heart, its deceitfulness is the most profound. Simply put, the heart cannot be trusted.
Our hearts’ desires are birthed out of deception. If this is the case, why do we expect God to answer every prayer request? If we are praying our hearts’ desires, and our hearts are not trustworthy, should God just give us everything we ask? This is why Jesus Christ said that we should pray for God’s will to be done (v6). Not the will of our deceitful hearts, but the will of God be done in our lives in Jesus’ name.
Take Home Lesson: The heart is deceitful and cannot be trusted. Pray the will of God and not the desires of your heart. You should get more answered prayers that way.
Homework: Pray and ask God to transform your heart and keep it pure that your heart and the will of God might be in sync.
